Our world is in a predicament. The delicate balance that supports life that evolution (or God) has created is being tilted by deforestation, overfishing, increasing population, global warming and such, threatening the fundamentals for life. Planet Earth appears to be spiraling downwards towards an inescapable end. Taking all of this into consideration, it appears that mass emigration to another planet might be the only solution. However, is it really too late to turn the clock? Or maybe more importantly, is it morally right to abandon ship when the storm is gathering? The damage we have caused to our world is both unbelievable and undeniable. Only 17% of planet Earth’s landmass is still untouched by mankind (excluding Antarctica). Our world’s natural oil and gas resources are soon fully consumed; renewable sources only stand for about 13% of the energy created. All the emissions from burning fossil fuels are carelessly released into the atmosphere, and as a result, the ozone layer is in an incredibly tattered shape. However, if we could move to another planet, thus leaving this one, the Earth would recuperate. The largest hole in the ozone, the one above the Antarctic, would, according to NASA scientists, recover by 2068. Similarly, if there were no humans to fish the oceans dry, and no humans to chop the forests down, slowly but steadily, the world’s ecosystems would recover and the biodiversity would regain lost grounds. The human race has created this situation, and we owe it to the Earth and the other species that we reverse it. There are a number of valid arguments for saving our world by emigrating to another, and although leaving for another planet may save this one, abandoning Earth may not yet be necessary. All hope is not lost – it is still within our power to undo the damages ourselves. It will be a task of great difficulty, but one that we can pull off. Since when were problems solved by burying one’s head in the sand? Besides, if you do bury your head in the sand, chances are, you won’t like what you see when you stick it back up. Taking the emergency exit whenever there are bumps on the road will create a â€Å"laissez faire† mentality, which never has solved anything. If awareness of this crisis can be raised all around the world, and if people realize just how important the matter we are dealing with is, there is a significant chance that we can start acting in a sufficiently environmentally friendly manner for the previous natural balance to be restored, without us leaving Earth for a far-off planet. By abandoning the planet we do not solve the true problem, we simply run away from it. If we were all deported to another planet, but didn’t change our behavior, all we would do is repeat the same mistakes we made on Earth. What does shifting planets mean if we still don’t own up and take action to reverse the situation we have thrust ourselves into? If we recognize now that problems such as global warming, overfishing and deforestation are not resolved by turning our backs to them, it will also be understood that these will not vanish because we choose to flee from them. We must do something about the tribulations we have now, only then we can move on. Exporting our problems to another planet is not solving them. Furthermore, there is also is a moral aspect to this issue. It would be indecent and ethically incorrect to simply change planets and abandon earth when we are encountering real and serious problems which in addition are caused by ourselves This world is optimal for our form of life. If just the weight of the proton in the air molecule was the slightest bit different all life on earth would be impossible. Similarly, if aliens would visit Earth, they would die of inhaling oxygen. It is an incredible chain of circumstances that allow us to live by breathing oxygen. The human race has become adapted to live on planet Earth over millions and millions of years of evolution. Just like a hole is perfect for the water puddle it contains, Earth is perfect for man. This taken into consideration, we can’t just destroy this Earth, and then leave it without the slightest effort to do something about it. We were made for this planet, and now that it is being destroyed, the very least we can do is to try to reverse what we’ve done. In any case, fleeing should be the very last option. All of us who inhabit Earth have inherited it from earlier generations. We are merely the present caretakers of this Earth, just like thousands of generations before us have been. Therefore, we have a moral responsibility, both towards our children as well as to our ancestors, to protect and preserve something extraordinary that no one ever can own, only borrow. On the one hand, it is a fact that we are well on the way of destroying Earth, and if all human beings were to leave the Earth, there is a chance that the Earth might recover. However, this is only true if all humans are transported to another planet. The question was â€Å"would the world be a better place if large-scale emigration to other planets were to be possible? † Upon a closer look, mass emigration does not necessarily mean that all humans are transported, rather just some. This is certainly of importance, as it is not necessarily the number of people on Earth that decides if the world is going to recuperate or not. What is more important is how the people who actually do live here treat the environment, i e how much carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere, how much fish we fish from our seas and how many trees we cut from our forests. If 50% of the world’s population was evacuated to another planet, but the remaining 50% treated the environment worse than before, the problems would not be solved. Rather than focusing on efficient ways to deport masses of people to other planets, we should focus on efficient ways to save this planet, with us on it. Question: What is the Issue of racism ? Answer: Introducation The issue of racism has been a matter of concern in all over the world for centuries now. The difference between people has been created based on various matters. Developed countries have been an active practitioner in this curse. American countries have suffered a lot because of this practice as many people used to come from Africa in search of work because there was not much available in those African countries. Canada has been a country of diverse religions and linguistic heritage since ages. The impact of racism has always been of a substantial amount in the past but recently there have been some improvements in this issue. First Nations, Francophones, New Canadians and the Visible Minority are the four divisions by which people of Canada are distinguished. The first aspect that has to be highlighted regarding this topic is about the people living in Canada. Various types of people have come to Canada and assimilated in the country. The social history of Canada is different from other countries. A vast population consists of various indigenous communities and the aboriginal people and people settling in from various parts of Europe. Educated and high society people dominate different cities of the country like Quebec, Montreal, Ontario and they are generally from European countries. The aboriginal people and the First Nations people were tortured throughout the country. British tried to influence the whole country with their culture and education and other spheres. It can be argued that in a place like Canada where many types of people live settling in should possess a multifarious and diverse outlook towards cultural, sociological and economical aspects to develop the resources of the country. In contrast to that, the only thing happen ed there, was the spreading of racial activities. It was extremely unwanted there. Later, when it gained freedom from the British the number of people settling in from French provinces began to grow more. They were termed as Francophones (Imbeault et al.). These people were the main targets of racism in the country. One very important aspect of Canadian racism was not only dependent on the skin color but also on the different linguistic background (Currie et al.). The history of Canada is full of many immigrant cases. It is very pertinent that there have been clashes between them to establish supremacy over one another. The racism is mainly committed based on skin color as we have seen in the case of Troy Maxson in the novel Fences (Menson-Furr). The diversity in Canada based on various kinds of people belonging from various linguistic backgrounds is so immense that the acts of racism have been and seen in the past few centuries. Quebec had stayed firm in holding their grounds when the British powers were running rampage to conquer the entire Canadian territory. They could not outnumber the people in Quebec as they still believed in their language, their ethnicity, and their Roman Catholic beliefs. The city was then observing the lights of development and the process had begun for its modernizat ion (Senese and Kathi). The poor people were not given their prior rights and were oppressed by the local clergymen. The people were deprived of important services and their growth rate in accordance to the economic change perspective was very slow. They did not get opportunities in the high earning employments. This kind of racial discrimination that was prevalent in those days was not something very desirable as it stood in the way of the countrys development. Naturally, other powerful European countries would set their eyes on that particular region and attempt to dominate Canada and establish their supremacy over the other people. The situation was like stabbing their own people on the back to gain power and rise to prominence. Racism, as a topic of argument, is very controversial because it involves many topics. It is a significant note that there was a very bitter relationship between the French-aboriginals and the British-aboriginals. There was a very tough environment to live in Canada because of these problems. Later the evolving of the fur trade improved the situations and the mutual relationship between the colonizing British and the local people (Palmer, Howard and Driedger). The development based on technology began in Canada because of the two forces the aboriginals and the settlers. The influx of the immigrants was from areas like South Asia and China and Japan (Rahim). The black immigrants were supposed to be a threat to the native people. These black people were oppressed and faced the pangs of social discrimination. They were captured and the white skinned people in Canada had made them slaves. Later on the African Canadians, Asian Canadians and the First Nations people felt this injustice as well. The visible minorities were the victims of racism activities as the slavery systems persisted. Besides, the visible minorities, the Muslim communities were also barred from enter the country after the terrorist attacks in USA in 2001 (Nagra and Ito). One can surely argue from the fact even in recent times America is not free from racial discrimination be it based on skin color or religion. Canada is surely going to have an impact of these incidents, as they are close neighbors of USA. This is not a good advertisement for the Western world because they are the forbearers of development. Racism has diminished in the recent times. The recent reports say that Canada has become one of the safest places in the world to live in (Mullings and Delores). The issue is the racism has killed thousands of men and women through ages and made many people homeless. The argument lies in the fact that for many decades the Canadian people have committed racist activities by depriving the immigrants of basic facilities. The practice of slavery existed in regions like New France and British North America. Thousands of black people suffered due to this inequality. This was a hammer blow to the humanitarian rights of a person. It is simply a way of diminishing the reputation of ones own country. The people with British accent got jobs in the uppermost posts and the other people had to do only very trivial jobs. During the First World War, people belonging from Germany were victimized badly. This level of intolerance cannot be expected from a country with various multilinguistic, multicult ural kinds of people living in it. The multicultural history of Canada was laid waste by the curse of racism (Fleras and Augie). In the defense of these criticisms, it can be said the native Canadians considered the black immigrants as people who were criminals and a threat to their economic progress (Knowles and Valerie). This was not at all a perfect idea to deal with immigrants because the people have immigrated to another land after facing some troubles in their own land. No people are born criminals as circumstances pave the way to how a person should be. A practice that takes lives of people or renders them homeless has no point to be supported for the welfare of the society. The conclusion can be drawn from this essay based on arguments that racism is a social evil and it has no place in the modern society. However, Canada is now one of the safest places to live in the modern world; the evils of racial activities may still not have been abolished at some places. Feminism What is feminism? By general definition, feminism is a philosophy in which women and their contributions are valued. It is based on social, political and economical equality for women. Feminists can be anyone in the population, men, women, girl or boys. Feminism can also be described as a movement. A revolution that includes women and men who wish the world to be equal without boundaries. These boundaries or blockades are better known as discrimination and biases against gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status and economic status. Everyone views the world with his or her own sense of gender and equality. Feminists view the world as being unequal. They wish to see the gender gap and the idea that men are superior to women decreased or even abolished. Carol Gilligan is one woman who has contributed much time and effort to the feminist theory. Her beliefs and ideas are based upon difference feminism. In this essay I will tie the ideas and beliefs of Carol Gilligan with informati on from our text, the packet read in class and the book, Faces of Feminism. Carol Gilligan is a lecturer and assistant professor at Harvard University as well as a psychologist. She has many theories that deal with moral reasoning and development. In her influential book In a Different Voice, she sets forth the idea that women make decisions according to a criteria of ethics of care and that men make decisions according to an ethic of rights.(3) In her book, Carol Gilligan also disagrees with Lawrence Kohlbergs' theory, which suggests that Few people matured fully in their moral reasoning...but women hardly ever did.(2) In her opposition Gilligan stated that women make moral decisions according to different but equally mature and morally upright reasoning.(2) She feels that women are different because they posses a different hereditary set of values and beliefs. This opposition to Kohlberg's theory was backed by research. Even though there was research done to support Gilligan, it s eemed to have experimenter bias. It was not an open or strong experiment and it only observed the actions of the white middle class. This did not give a clear or objective view on the separate criteria of women and men. The views and ideas on moral reasoning and development set forth by Carol Gilligan are those of many difference feminists.Difference feminism is just one type of feminism. It gives a concept that women should go back to traditional roles(3) set by society. It also states that gender is natural and is not learned by the society in which one lives. Not all Feminists agree with this theory but there are many feminists, such as Carol Gilligan who agree with this idea that even though men and women are different, they each have their own separate place in society. Difference feminism is successful because it tells people what they want to hear: women really are different in just the ways that we always thought. ... And men have power, wealth and control of social resource s because women do not really want them.(3) This idea of difference feminism sets forth a number of stereotypes. They give feminists and the general public a skewed view of the theory behind the philosophy. In the book Faces of Feminism, feminist theorists were asked, Do women have to be the same as men to be equal?(1) The majority of responses were yes. It is believed that in order for women and men to become equal, society must unlearn and uncondition(1) the gender roles and standards it has established throughout history. Society and the people in it have set up the basis for gender difference and now many feminists are breaking down those barriers. Carol Gilligans position on moral development and her views as a feminist, suggest that womens nature is not something to be replaced, but something to be maintained, indeed celebrated, for the sake both of women and society.(1) This view is tied in with the general definition of feminism, that women should be valued for their accomplishments. The dictionary defines mythology, as a set of stories, traditions, and beliefs associated with a particular group or the history of an event, arising naturally or deliberately fostered or a body of myths as that of a particular people or that relating to a particular person.   The word â€Å"Myth† itself is of the Greek origin from the Greek word mythos, â€Å"speech, word, fact, story, narrative†.   Although these words are rather restrictive in definition, the word myth can be said to fail to take into account the large body of twentieth century work on myth from many angles.   Myth, is also described or defined to be the compilation of some type of field work; and the aim may be to produce something of value for religious studies.   A myth theory can also be defined as raw material for transformation into artistic productions.   In some way shape or form, every culture or ethnic group is an original author of theoretical myths.   Fo r example, there has been scientific evidence that at one point there were parts of the earth that were covered in water and are now dry.   Other myths tell of an island, floating in the sky where sky people lived long before the world was created. A theoretical approach call the New Criticism/Formalism is said to be used when there is out of date text with no author or historical background.   It is misleading to read Greek or Latin text that is translated into another language word for word.   There is no way to trace the changes in myth over time because the text will not be chronological.   Late authors especially the Romans liked Traditional Biographical Criticism when they created life-records.   Traditional Biographical Criticism also works well for writings of political people who interpreted political stories in myth over time.   Many of these myths go unnamed and it becomes hard to analyze the author’s life in such cases. Folklore Studies and Anthropology explores unidentified works since in Folklore there are no individual creators of tales necessary.   Folklore studies and Anthropology work well when it comes to comparative literature approaches.   It is not limited to one version or text of a myth.   It works well when it comes to Greek and Roman magic or superstitions.   These studies are not good when it comes to complex symbolism.   However, it does show similarities between myths and legends. Earth Diver-Myths speaks of scientific evidence where the Earth has parts that are now dry and once were covered with water.   The myth says that a person dove into the water to retrieve some Earth.   The Earth that was brought to the surface is the same land we live on today.   There are other myths that say it was mud that was brought to the surface in a different way until it became the Earth.   The creation myth of Christians and Jews tells of the Earth once being covered completely by water.   The Japanese creation myth tells of muddy oceans covering the world at the beginning of time.   A GOD named Izanagi and GODDESS named Izanami were curious about what was under the Ocean.   Izanagi threw his staff into the ocean and pulled out some Earth which became the island of Japan.   Iroquois creation myth states that the island floating in the sky before the world was created had sky people who never died nor was born.   They never experienced sadness except for one day when a sky woman who discovered that she was going to give birth to twins.   She told her husband and this news made him very upset because they had never experienced this before and it did not seem possible.   He was so angry that he went to the center of the island where there was a big tree that gave off light over the entire island.   The husband was so angry and in disbelief that he tore down this tree tearing a big hole in the center of the island.   He then pushed his wife through the hole and she fell towards the water below.   There were water animals that existed on the Earth and saw the lady falling towards the water.   The water animals saved the lady and began to help her by diving to the bottom of water to get mud to build land.   The animals then took the mud and spread it on the back of a big turtle.   They continued and continued as it grew and grew becoming the size of North America. The issue of multi races in the state has caused racism in the schools hence it is important for the leaders in the education sector including the school administrators/principal to address this issue by applying the ISLLC standards no 6 diversity which advocates for the school principal to be able to understand ,be able to respond and influence relationship between students and the staff both in terms of political ,economical, legal and cultural relationship this kind of relationship should be reflected both in the class room and in the school compound and in the community. Also the principal should be able to plan and use his thinking and problem solving techniques that will enable him handle the issue of racism as stated in standards 5 of the ISLLC decision making strategies Discouraging test score is another area that has tried to evaluate the number of drop outs in schools i n relation to failing common exams like English language .in this state ,there is a big assumption that the use of F/R/L program has dropped drastically because learners fear being embarrassed because of failing exams.
